Following its destruction by fire in 1998, the central market site remained vacant for many years while awaiting reconstruction. A comprehensive assessment identified more than 8,000 commercial activities affected, many of which had relocated to temporary structures and informal clusters around the original site. The reconstruction project has evolved into a major urban regeneration initiative covering 50 hectares, including approximately 10 hectares dedicated to the new Grand Marché, organised into five development sectors. The project aims to create a renewed and connected urban fabric, strengthening links with the surrounding neighborhoods and integrating the market into its wider urban context.
The support provided to the City focuses on technical assistance for the urban and architectural aspects of both the overall regeneration strategy and the design of the new Grand Marché.
